Gail Winbury

One of my gifts as an artist is to understand chaos and uncertainty, and through visual language, make it whole . My current work explores the synthesis of gestural oil painting with a more minimal  and controlled approach. This work is about the passage of time and loss.

I work intuitively and from sketches, but always with a psychological conceptualization. All aspects of the paint;i.e color, texture and form develop a statement about being alive.  I vary and layer the density, texture and translucence of paint, revealing the history of mark marking. The work contains a tension between present and past, control and abandon, and permanence and transcendence.

The paintings are stripped to eliminate what is unnecessary, and they shift between the personal and emotional to something more ephemeral.  This mirrors a transition from concerns about appearance and the body to matters more transcendent and impermanent. My art is influenced by biology, depth psychology, Buddhist teachings, and music.
